Market sentiment about generative AI has entered a new era. Hype surrounding the first iterations of products and services has faded and for the first time since AI burst onto the scene, leaders are able to see the pros and cons with clarity.
While many studies and articles have looked at how AI is transforming things like coding, customer service, and product creation, we felt that business processes and operations deserved a closer look. This is why we’re excited to announce the 2024 State of LLMs in Business Processes report.
Workato commissioned an independent market survey from UserEvidence of over 1,000 business leaders about generative AI in their business processes. What we found is that the ways businesses use AI are already changing, and are set to change further.
Among the most important takeaways is the sheer volume of organizations that are actively experimenting with AI in their processes: about 90%. And of these organizations, 89% report measurable results from AI initiatives in their processes. Adoption is fueled by more than market sentiment and general hype, however. Survey results show that most leaders feel they need to adopt AI in order to stay ahead of competitors and peers doing the same.
Some other top findings:
- AI is in use, but is a work in progress.
89% of companies surveyed report using gen AI in business processes, but only 23% consider it fully deployed.
- Governance matters. A lot.
Governance is the #1 requirement to improve trust in AI. Only 60% of business leaders report feeling comfortable with AI operating on its own.
- Experts in the AI process loop are a high priority.
Most leaders report that expert reviewers should sign off on AI decisions and content, not front line or entry level employees.
- APIs are the current and future top approach to harnessing AI.
Almost half of business leaders surveyed believe APIs are the best way to activate and harness AI–far and away the top choice. Dead last? RPA.
